Abraham Maslow's triangle helps us understand why we are motivated to do what we do.
He is a psychologist; he has his Ph.D., BA, and MA.
Maslow created this hierarchy of needs based on his idea of human needs spread across five basic levels.
Maslow believes that you need to start at the bottom of the pyramid and complete each level before moving up to the next.
In 1935 he became interested in human sexuality.
During the years 1951 to 1969 he originated the idea of self-actualization in his famous book The Organism.
He then began a crusade for humanistic psychology.
In the beginning of his career he worked with monkeys, there he noticed that some needs are far more important than others.
Even though Maslow sorted each need into its own specific level, there are also needs among each level that are more important than the others
He died on June 8,1970 because of a heart attack.

Physiological needs are things that are vital to our survival.
Water
Food
Air
Shelter
Rest
Safety needs are where people want order and control in their lives. Actions that can motivate these things to stay in order are obtaining a steady job, moving into a safe neighborhood, contributing money to a saving account, etc.
Insurance
Security
Law
Order
Belongingness needs are the needs for emotional attachment. To avoid things such as depression, loneliness, or anxiety a person must feel loved by the ones who surround them. Personal relationships as well and relationships with clubs play a very important role.
Family
Romantic attachment
Friends
Clubs
Church
Self-esteem needs are the needs that are met by the feeling of accomplishment and prestige. People need to feel like they are valued by others as well as to feel like they are making a change in the world.
Personal worth
Freedom
Independence
Self confidence
Self-actualization is the last stage in which a person determines their full potential and realizing it. It includes being all you can be.
Full use of talents and capabilities
Self-fulfillment
Finding who you are
These 5 levels are important to human development because they are a theory of motivation and each one helps a person shape their personality. Ishmeal Beah vs. The Pyramid (Tierra)
Quotes showing which level Ishmeal Beah is on: BEFORE THE RUF:
"One afternoon, when Father came home......" (6)- This quote shows how Ishmeal Beah has shelter which means he is on level one or physiological
"Fathers had come running from their workplace"(9)- This quote shows the steady jobs meaning he has moved onto level two or social or security
"...where we met up with old friends, Gibrilla, Kaloko, Khalilou.."(8)" -Ishmeal has family and friends, he has now moved up to level three with the belongingness needs
"the next day Junior, Talloi, and I stayed at Khalilou's house and waited for our friends to return from school..."(9)- Ishmeal and his brother both have freedom since they cannot go to school he is now on level four self-esteem
"I Loved the dance, and particularly enjoyed the lyrics..."(6)- He has made it to the last and final level or self actualization and would be here until the end of the life until the RUF came in and started Beah back at the bottom
AFTER THE RUF:
"When we left home that day before, there had been no indication the rebels were anywhere near" (10)- He has a shelter but it will soon be gone (Physiological)
"Junior, Talloi, and I looked at each other and knew that we must return to Mattru Jong.."(14)- After seeing all the casualties this quotes is revealing that the RUF is close, and that safety and security is simply floating away (Safety & Security)
"Once again I was with a group of boys"(55)- Ishmeal Beah has no more family around but he has long lost friends (Belongingness)
He has not reached the levels of Esteem or Self-Actualization
http://www.simplypsychology.org/maslow.html Renee How does someone's level impact their relationship with other people or themselves? If the physiological needs are not met, satisfying thoughts may control the mind, causing a person to be unaware of life.
(Pg 30) when the boys stole the little kids corn
(Pg 47) when Ishmael climbed the coconut tree not knowing previously how to, then after he ate he tried again and could not.
(Pg 70) "I feel like each time I accept death, apart of me dies" -Saidu
Most adults don’t realize their security needs until an emergency or periods of disorganization occurs, then they panic attempting to fix them.
(Pg 48) where the father Panics, fearing that Ishmael may harm his family.
(Pg 101) "It seemed we ad finally found safety at Yele."
Belongingness
(Pg 52) "The most difficult part of being in the forest was the loneliness."
(Pg 101) "Musa had grown popular among the boys and would always end the night with a different story"
How does this theory impact children?
Physiological Needs – Food, water and sleep
After the RUF -when ishmeal and the other boys are traveling they only stop for food water and rest.they even put their lives in danger and also steal trying to get food for themselves. saidu dies because he lacks a proper diet and doesn't get enough rest to keep up with the other boys
Safety and Security- to not fear what might happen next. To know things will be positively the same.
the boys have no safety nor security. they live in day to day fear of incountering the RUF. they don't trust strangers well, and are constantly on the run for hope that they'll find safety or their families
Belonging- loved and belonging from family as well as other groups.
the only slight belongingness is the group of boys ishmael travels with
Esteem- to have recognition for something they’ve done and take pride in it as well.
Self-actualization- develop hobbies.
the most important level is physiological needs, because Ishmael will have certain needs in order to survive. food and water and shelter are the 3 main and most important needs.the other two hierarchy needs you may come across are safety and security, love/belonging. these two also go hand in hand because of Ishmaels situation. S&S- remember Ishmael is a young boy when the war starts, and he looses his family trying to escape, so anyone who gives Ishmael the sense of safety and he feels he will no longer live in fear has fulfilled this need. L/B- also anyone who will accept Ishmael, and treats him as family or a friend
